Detailed description

Philadelphia Country Club is a private, 27-hole golf facility located in Gladwyne, Pennsylvania. The facility has the 18-hole Smith Mill Golf Course and the 9-hole Centennial Course.

The club dates to 1890 when it was organized as a country club for social purposes and horse riding. The club purchased a sixty acre property in Bala adjoining Fairmount Park, and constructed a Polo field; hence the horse head logo. A nine-hole Golf course was completed on the site in 1892.

With the rise in the popularity of Golf, the Club purchased land for an 18 hole Golf course in Gladwyne in 1926. The Spring Mill Course opened for play in 1928. The course was designed by William Flynn.

In 1990, on the occasion of the Club’s Centennial Anniversary, an additional nine hole course was opened. This course, named The Centennial Course, was designed by Tom Fazio.

Both courses were built on rolling terrain and have wide-open fairways and subtly sloping greens.  Water comes into play on two holes of the Smith Mill Golf Course. In 1939, The U.S. Open was held on the Spring Mill course, which was won by Byron Nelson
