Challenge Golf Course first opened for play in 1992. The course was designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan.
This unique course was set up for the physically challenged and is supported by the Edwin Shaw Hospital Foundation. The course consists of three holes with three sets of tees per each hole. There are cart paths with many added adjustments. There are no water hazards, but there are sand bunkers. There are special features including wheelchair-accessible paths, customized golf carts and handrails to the greens. All the front tees have open and direct shots to the greens, so people won't have to overcome the course hazards. Hole #1 plays slightly uphill. Hole #2 requires an accurate shot to hit the smallest of three greens. Hole #3, the finishing hole, has a long, narrow green.
The golf course was the first facility in the nation built for individuals with disabilities, according to Akron General officials.
Owned and operated by Akron General, the course offers PGA-certified assistants and certified recreational therapists, as well as specialized golf carts, clubs and tee devices to help in the physical rehabilitation of people recovering from strokes, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, amputations and neuromuscular disorders. According to Akron General officials, it has been expanded to include adults and children with visual impairments, people with developmental challenges and those with less disabling impairments, such as hip or knee replacements.
The course is designed to assist all individuals, both disabled and able-bodied, learn the game of golf for the first time and also helps experienced golfers in need of adaptive assistance to play the game.
