Canoe Brook Country Club, North Course

Canoe Brook Country Club is a private 36-hole golf facility located in Summit, New Jersey. Canoe Brook Country Club has two 18-hole golf courses, they are The North Course and The South Course.

Canoe Brook was chartered in 1901. In January 1902 the founding members chose Jack Vickery and his assistant Alex Smith to design and lay out an 18-hole golf course measuring 5,754 yds.

The front nine holes were completed and ready for play in the fall of 1902, and the back nine holes were ready for play in 1905. In 1916 Walter Travis was chosen to rebuild all 18 holes and Canoe Brook’s North Course became a true “Championship Golf Course.” Since then the course has gone through several more changes. What is now the Short Hills Mall used to be part of the North Course until 1945. The Short Hills Mall land was exchanged for acreage to accommodate the seven holes lost there. The result - - a golf course undivided by highway.

The new holes were designed by Mr. A.H. Tull. In the 1970’s, when the new interstate connection between I-78 and I-287 was built, holes adjacent to the new highway on both the North and South Courses were redesigned again, this time by Rees Jones Golf Course Design, which has been the Club’s resident architectural firm ever since.

In 1991 Canoe Brook’s Board and Membership made a decision to completely restore and partially redesign the North Course. The design of the course was again awarded to Rees Jones, and there is no doubt that Rees painted his signature onto the course.

Canoe Brook Country Club, The North Course measures 7,066 yards and plays to a par of 72. The course rating is 74.8 and it has a slope rating of 138.
