Detailed description

Lakewood Golf Club, previously a private course and property named Lakewood Country Club, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Lakewood Golf Club / Lakewood Country Club first opened for play in 1961. It was designed by architect Robert Bruce Harris. The course was redesigned and reopened in 2009. The designer was Ron Garl who preserved the character of the original course while upgrading the 18-hole, 7,002 yards, par 72 course with modernized fairways, tee boxes and greens - new improvements to an old favorite.

The first of 26 New Orleans Opens was played at Lakewood in 1963. Past champions include Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Billy Casper, Seve Ballesteros, Miller Barber, Dick Mayer, Bill Rogers and Lee Trevino. Lakewood also hosted two USG Championships as well as two Southern Golf Association Championships.

For many years, the men's and women's golf teams from Tulane University used Lakewood as their home course.

Lakewood Country Club was on the verge of bankruptcy when the Firemen's Pension and Relief Fund purchased the property in May, 2003 for $6 million. The private club was closed and the facility was opened for public play on February 28, 2009 after undergoing a $9 million renovation. It was renamed Lakewood Golf Club.

The New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund has plans to develop the surrounding property into an upscale golf resort including golf villas, a 4-star luxury hotel, condominiums and more in the next few years. The renovated golf course is the first phase the master plan.

Lakewood is a daily fee facility, offering traditional membership with initiation deposits and membership dues.
