Kohanaiki Golf and Ocean Club is a private 18-hole golf course located in Kalua-Kona, on Hawaii's Big Island, two miles from Kona International Airport.
This Rees Jones golf course first opened for play in 2013.
Jones' design was no doubt inspired by the breathtaking beauty seen at every turn. Winding over 100 acres, the layout seamlessly blends the sparkling blue ocean, sand, surf and lava that surround it. The course is a par 72 that can play up to 7,329 yards.
Jones has said of the course, "The course is built on lava rock, but looks natural like an old-style golf course. The fairways are very ample on the first 11 holes, but very challenging for better players from the back tees. You have to manage your game on the oceanfront holes 12–17 because of the natural features, and 18 is a wonderful finishing hole." Rees admits, "I hope players are distracted. It's too incredible a place not to look at what's around you."
Five sets of tees allow the course to play from 5,126 to 7,329 yards. Many of the fast, contoured greens are elevated and drop steeply off the sides. There are only 65 bunkers and a single lake linking holes 7 and 8, however views of the Pacific are everywhere.
